THE EYE
The Forty Servants in Theory & Practice
Hello, good people of the internet, and welcome back after a long break to The Forty Servants in Theory and Practice, a series where I take a deeper look into the philosophy, use, and evolution of The Forty Servants system, drawing on nearly a decade of hands-on experience and magical experimentation.
Each entry in this free section of the series will focus on one Servant at a time, offering background insight, design history, divination reflections, shadow aspects, magical applications, and how my personal understanding of each has shifted or deepened over the years.
If you would like to support this series, please consider a paid Patreon Membership, or sending a donation! All amounts, even very small ones, all really, really help to keep the engine running here.
If you know nothing about The Forty Servants, then have a look at this link HERE. You can start using The Forty Servants straight away, as there are free resources available at that link that give you access to everything the system has to offer.
So, let’s go…
THE EYE
“The Eye shows us that there is a divine plan to all things. It encourages us to remember that all is as it should be.”
ARTWORK
Like a number of other Servants, the artwork for The Eye originates from the first, unpublished version of my comic The Great Work. The original version of this comic was just five pages long, drawn in a much more “realistic” style than the more cartoony approach I ultimately ended up using for it. The Eye shares this origin with several other Servants who started out in that same short comic, including The Media, The Fixer, The Desperate, The Protestor, and The Devil.
Originally, the art was just black and white line work for the comic’s panels. When it came time to adapt the image for The Forty Servants, I lifted it wholesale from its original context, other than adding some colour to it. The imagery itself, I suppose could be classified as occult cliché, but I like to feel it’s more classic and iconic. After all, clichés are clichés because they hold profound truths and patterns.
This symbology of the Eye of Providence (also known as the All-Seeing Eye) usually depicts a single eye enclosed within a triangle, often radiating rays of light or a glorious halo. I am reliably informed by the internet that its roots stretch back millennia, that it stretches back millennia to ancient Sumerian sculptures that used enlarged eyes to emphasise holy vigilance, and to the ancient Egyptian Eye of Horus, which symbolised protection, healing, and restoration.
By the time of the European Renaissance, the emblem was adopted into Christian iconography, where the triangle represented the Holy Trinity and the radiating light signified the benevolent, omnipresent gaze of God watching over humanity. In the late 18th century, it was embraced by Freemasonry as a reminder that the “Great Architect of the Universe” observes all of our thoughts and deeds.
Today, it is famously emblazoned on the reverse of the Great Seal of the United States and the one-dollar bill, though personally, when I see the symbol out in the wild, I’m mostly usually reminded of Robert Anton Wilson.
THE SIGIL
The sigil for The Eye clearly leans heavily and unashamedly into the classic “eye in the triangle” symbolism. I didn’t see any need to reinvent the wheel here; in fact, I wanted to specifically tap into the massive amount of historical and egregoric weight that the symbol has.
You can use this sigil when you feel completely lost in the weeds of your own life and need a reminder that there is a wider pattern at play. I often draw it on in chalk on my office door (which is painted black like a blackboard) or visualise it in front of me when I start to feel like I am taking life too personally or seriously. It’s a great sigil to place on your altar when you are doing any sort of long-term destiny or path-finding work.
Because the design is so iconic and structurally simple, in theory, it should be easy to hold in your mind’s eye, though I am aware that a lot of people struggle with this. But if you can visualise it in your mind, you can just flash the sigil in your imagination whenever you need a rapid shift in perspective from microcosm to macrocosm.
Another great way to work with this sigil is as a tool for surrender. As magicians, we are often so used to trying to force our will onto reality that we forget the power of just letting go. Drawing The Eye’s sigil can act as a physical release valve for that pressure. It is a way of saying to the universe, “Okay, I clearly don’t have all the answers right now, I can’t work this out, and what I am doing seems not to be helping, so I yield to the Divine plan.” It takes the immense pressure off having to micromanage every tiny detail of existence.
Sigil Quick Uses: Gaining spiritual insight, aligning your vision with the divine plan, finding meaning in chaotic events, discovering your true purpose, and invoking a sense of universal trust.
DIVINATION
When The Eye appears in a reading, the message is usually one of reassurance: everything is going according to plan, even if that plan is currently invisible to you. You might be in the middle of a storm, feeling like everything is falling apart, but The Eye arrives to tell you that this is all part of the necessary process. Everything is as it should be, both the good and the bad.
The Eye encourages you to zoom out. Are you getting too caught up in the micro-dramas of your day-to-day life? Are you trying to force an outcome because you think you know better than the universe? This Servant asks you to surrender a little bit of that control. Trust the timing of your life.
If you are asking whether a certain path is the right one, then The Eye is a strong indicator that, yes, you are exactly where you are supposed to be. It can also suggest that a sudden realisation or “aha!” moment is imminent—a moment where the seemingly random puzzle pieces of your life suddenly snap together to reveal the complete picture.
Beyond just the “big picture” stuff, The Eye is a solid indicator that someone, or something, in the unseen world has your back. You might not actively feel their presence right now, but this Servant appears to tell you that you are being looked after. Ultimately, it’s a reassurance that higher forces are keeping an eye on the board from afar, helping to manoeuvre things in your favour.
I have to be honest here, though, The Eye is a Servant I have had a somewhat rocky road with over the years. Mostly because I probably just overthought it. I used to really struggle with the notion that “everything is exactly as it should be,” especially when things were completely not working out. I didn’t like the creeping sense of predetermination or predestination that this archetype can sometimes lean towards.
If everything is going according to the plan, but it’s not my plan, then I used to feel that this is far from a comforting card to see in a reading, despite that being the original description I put in the grimoire.
This Divine plan might entail great suffering, pain, loss, and heartbreak. And if I am just subject to someone else’s plan – divine or not – then what exactly is the point of me having wants, needs, ambitions, hopes, and dreams? And if there is a divine plan on how everything will work out, then where is my agency or autonomy? Am I just a pawn in a divine game?
But, over the years, I have softened to the Servant a lot and no longer see it in such black-and-white terms. A lot of this shift has come from my exposure to Kashmir Shivaism and realising that the concept of Lila (Life as a game or Divine play) doesn’t imply that life is frivolous, or that the divine is callous. It just means that life was created for the sake of experiencing life and not for any other ulterior purpose. It’s a game played purely for the sake of playing the game.
So, I now see this card more as being reminded that the way things are, are the way things are, and just because it may look like the world or my life has gone to hell in a handbasket, it doesn’t mean that something has gone fundamentally wrong.
SHADOW REVERSAL
Reversals in The Forty Servants don’t signify the opposite of the normal energy of the Servant, but more a dysfunctional version of it, or a detrimental misuse or misunderstanding of the qualities.
As I mentioned above, the shadow of The Eye often manifests as fatalism or a complete surrender of your personal agency. It is the trap of using “destiny” or “God’s plan” as an excuse to sit on your hands, play the victim, and do nothing. Believing in a wider cosmic order doesn’t mean you get to abdicate your personal responsibility. You are playing the game, which means you still have to make your moves.
In its most paranoid shadow form, The Eye can also manifest as conspiratorial thinking. Instead of feeling comforted by a broader plan, you might feel like the universe, or everyone around you, is actively conspiring against you. It’s the anxiety of being watched, judged, and controlled, rather than being watched over and guided.
MAGICK
Magickally speaking, The Eye is your direct line to the Super Consciousness, or whatever term you like that best describes that massive, overarching awareness of which our own personal consciousness is just a tiny microcosm or fractal aspect.
When you invoke The Eye, you are essentially trying to infuse yourself with that ultimate Divine presence. I’m talking about the pure “I AM” consciousness here; the original spark that existed at the beginning of all things and the silent witness that will still be there at the very end.
It is awareness itself, rather than the content of ego, story, identity, rules, resolutions, illusions, delusions, and limitations. It is that state of unbound potentiality (or chaos) before anything actually manifests into reality. Because this consciousness is absolute and encompasses all things, it can and will take countless shapes or forms, meaning it will present itself completely differently to every single person who works with it.
If you are about to make a major life decision and want to ensure it aligns with your highest path, invoke The Eye. Sit quietly with the card or sigil, light a candle, and ask out loud for clarity. Ask to be shown the bigger picture. It’s highly unlikely that you’ll get a booming voice from the heavens (at least I never have), but you can expect some insight to appear over the next while.
You can also use The Eye when your magick feels like it isn’t working. Sometimes, a spell doesn’t manifest because what you’re asking for directly contradicts your broader destiny or the divine play. Simply ask The Eye to help you understand why a door is remaining closed, allowing you to stop banging your head against it and find the open window instead. To do so, put the image or sigil in front of you in your room or altar, and call to The Eye like it was a person in another room. Then, when you feel (or just decide) that it has arrived, talk to it out loud like it is a normal person in the room with you.
SERVANT COMBINATIONS
The Eye and The Saint is a fantastic pairing to help strengthen your connection to divine or spiritual insight. If you are trying to petition higher powers, The Eye provides the vision while The Saint acts as the mediator.
Combine The Eye and The Conductor to help align your personal vision and actions with the divine plan. Often these two can be at odds with each other so if they can come into alignment then things should start to flow a lot better.
A potent combination for seeing through the fog is The Moon with The Eye. The Moon shows the illusions, lies, and self-deceptions, while The Eye reveals the absolute truth sitting beneath them.
Use The Eye with The Explorer when you are embarking on deep spiritual development and want to ensure your personal evolution remains aligned with your ultimate life purpose.
And that’s it for this time, I hope you got something good from it. If you’d like to chat about it, you can leave a comment below, or come find me on Bluesky, though I’m not terribly active over there.
If you would like to support me in doing all the things I do, then feel free to join the PATREON, buy a FORTY SERVANTS deck, get me a book or something from my Amazon Wish List, or just send me some money via PAYPAL. It all really, really helps, and is very much appreciated.
So, until next time,
MAY YOUR BEST DAYS BE AHEAD!
